Process-focused checklist for metalworking fluid selection
Metalworking fluid selection should consider operation type, material, tool life, surface quality, water quality and operator comfort together.
Problem
Metalworking fluids provide cooling, lubrication, chip removal and corrosion protection in cutting, grinding, drilling, milling, turning and forming.
Wrong product or wrong concentration may cause corrosion, odor, foam, tool life loss or surface quality issues.
Selection criteria
Grinding usually needs strong cooling and clean chip removal, while heavy cutting often requires more lubrication and load carrying capacity.
Material type is also decisive; steel, aluminum, cast iron, yellow metals and stainless steel may require different fluid characteristics.
Checklist
- Operation type: cutting, grinding, drilling, milling or turning
- Workpiece material
- Tool type and tool life target
- Surface quality expectation
- Cooling and lubrication need
- Water quality and hardness
- Concentration control method
- Odor, foam, bacteria and deposit risk
- Operator skin contact and safety conditions
- Machine cleanliness and corrosion protection
