Application Guide
How load and temperature guide gear oil selection
Gear oil selection should consider gearbox type, load, speed, temperature, shock load and EP additive requirements together.
Problem
Wrong oil selection in enclosed gearboxes, reducers and heavy-load transmission systems may cause wear, pitting, overheating and early failure.
Selection criteria
Low speed and high load may require higher viscosity. High speeds or hot operation may suffer from excessive viscosity, energy loss and overheating.
EP gear oils may be preferred for heavy load, low speed or shock load, but not every system requires EP additives.
Checklist
- Reducer or gearbox type
- Gear type: helical, bevel, worm or open gear
- Operating speed
- Load level and shock load
- Oil and ambient temperature
- OEM recommended ISO VG grade
- EP additive requirement
- Seal, paint compatibility and maintenance history
